Chanctonbury Ring

Chanctonbury Ring is a circle of beech trees, planted in the late 1700's by Charles Goring of Wiston House.

It is one of the most famous landmarks on the South Downs and is often visible from more than 40 miles away. Sadly many of the trees were destroyed in the great storm of 1987 - but nature is recovering well and 'The Ring' will eventually return to its full former glory.

Even in its diminished form it is nevertheless a place of great beauty and a favourite resting place on the National Trail.
