King Alfred

The imposing statue of King Alfred at the bottom of Winchester High Street marks the end (or the beginning) of  the South Downs Way National Trail.

Alfred, who was king of Wessex from 871 to 899 AD, would have known much of the trail and the villages along the way, since the South Downs provided the safest route through his kingdom. Has it changed very much .... ? Not really.
