Devils Dyke

Devil's Dyke
                                                           Devils Dyke &Saddlescombe

The South Downs Way runs down the southern edge of this spectacular land feature and then through the National Trust property of pretty Saddlescombe Farm.
You can see the trail in the middle part of the photo, between the two tree lines.

The feature was created when the devil decided to scourge a gap in the South Downs so that the sea would flow into the Sussex Weald and destroy all the Christian churches which were springing up there. Fortunately he was surprised by the crowing of a cock in the night and, thinking it was dawn, flew off with the job unfinished.

The clutch of earth he held in his claw as he flew away was dropped into the sea further west .............and so formed the Isle of Wight !
