What is the South Downs Way Annual Walk ?

The annual summer walk is by tradition a ‘supported’ rather than a guided walk.

It has taken place, without a break, for the past 31 years.

The start and finish points each day are planned to give between 9 and 14 miles walking. During the day everyone is free to make their own way, at their own pace, from start to finish.  Despite the large numbers taking part it is quite feasible, after just a couple of miles, to find oneself walking alone in the peace of the countryside

 Those who prefer to walk alongside members of the Footprints team are, of course, very welcome to do so.

Either way you are assured that there will always be people nearby to help with directions, a drink of water, some first aid or just a friendly smile.

To give you some idea of the people you’ll be walking with; the June 2010 questionnaire revealed:

  • Over half were walking it for the first time;
  • 60% were ladies;
  • 93% said afterwards that they found the whole event :  “very enjoyable” !
